About

Workshopping words is a free two-day conference and workshopping event which will be held at University of Sussex on July 10th-11th. Each day will centre on a plenary talk and workshop designed by experts to equip PhD students with cutting edge skills.

The first day of the event will feature a workshop on public facing linguistics. Post graduate students often lack opportunities for training in public engagement and can find it challenging to satisfy the ‘impact’ criteria of the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Day one will feature a plenary talk from Professor M. Lynne Murphy (University of Sussex) entitled ‘Linguistics for everybody: Communicating with the public about language’. Professor Murphy, A.K.A ‘Lynneguist’, author of the hugely popular blog, ‘Separated by a Common Language’ will also be running the practical workshop on public engagement. The first day will also provide an opportunity for PhD students to present on any aspect of their research.

On the evening of the first day there will be a conference dinner in Brighton which all attendees are invited to.

Day two will focus on corpus linguistics. In our current post truth climate, it is increasingly desirable that humanities research is grounded in empirical evidence. Corpus methodology is becoming increasingly important in linguistic research. In addition to  presentations from PhD students on their corpus based research, day two will feature a plenary talk from Professor Bas Aarts (UCL), director of the Survey of English Usage entitled ‘Methodology in Corpus Linguistics’. In addition, Professor Aarts will run a workshop on corpus methodology using the cutting-edge tools he and his team have developed for the ICE GB corpus.

This is a free event funded by the CHASE training and development fund, however registration is essential. See our Eventbrite page for further details.
