Workshops

Workshopping words aims to bring together members of the postgraduate linguistics community to share their work and ideas but it is also a training event. We are very lucky to have two highly accomplished linguists speaking this event, both of whom have agreed to share their expertise by running a workshop for attendees.

On day one, our workshop runner is Professor Lynne Murphy (University of Sussex). Lynne is the author of the popular blog Separated by a Common Language and has recently published a book on the relationship between British and American English  aimed at a general audience which has received rave reviews on both sides of the pond. Her workshop will be on communicating linguistic research to the public, and will focus on writing for a non-academic audience.

On day two, Professor Bas Aarts (UCL) will be running a workshop on corpus methodology and the use of the cutting edge ICECUP (International Corpus of English Corpus Utility Program) software in linguistic research. This technology has been developed for use with the ICE-GB corpus as part of the work of the Survey of English Usage at UCL. This workshop follows on from Bas’ talk on the ICECUP software, allowing participants to gain practical experience of using the software and a chance to explore the possiblities for research offered by ICE-GB.
